Charleston, S.C. (November 30, 2021) - The National Golf Course Owners Association (NGCOA) is pleased to announce Annika Sorenstam as the recipient of its 2022 Award of Merit, the organization’s most prestigious award, which recognizes long-term and significant contributions to the game of golf. Annika will accept the award, and then sit down with NGCOA CEO Jay Karen for a conversation and audience Q&A, on Wednesday, January 26 during NGCOA’s Golf Business Conference 2022 in Orlando, FL.

Annika started playing golf at the age of 12 and since then has amassed over 90 worldwide victories, including 72 on the LPGA and 11 Major Championships. Annika is often regarded as the greatest female golfer of all time. During her 15-year, Hall-of-Fame career, she rewrote the LPGA and Ladies European Tour record books, won countless awards, and changed the way women’s golf was played, viewed and covered.

Annika stepped away from professional golf after the 2008 season to focus on starting a family and the ANNIKA brand of businesses. In 2007, she started the ANNIKA Foundation, which provides golf opportunities at the junior, collegiate and professional levels while teaching young people the importance of living a healthy, active lifestyle through fitness and nutrition. The foundation conducts seven global events where more than 600 girls from 60+ countries compete annually.

In 2020, Annika was elected the President of the International Golf Federation which oversees golf in the Olympic Games. In 2021, Annika became the first female golfer and only the third female in sport to receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Read her full biography here

“We are thrilled to present the 2022 Award of Merit to Annika Sorenstam,” said Jay Karen, NGCOA CEO. “Like so many champions before, Annika’s long-term success and contributions to the game have fueled an enormous interest and engagement in our game worldwide. The cascading effect of this has only served to benefit the golf course owners and operators around our industry. On behalf of the industry, we are simply delighted to recognize her.”

The NGCOA Award of Merit and other NGCOA annual awards will be presented throughout the Golf Business Conference in Orlando from January 24-26, 2022. Learn more at golfbusinessconference.com.

Members Get Rebates on Products that Optimize On-Course Operations, Enhance the Player Experience and Maximize Revenue

Charleston, S.C. (September 1, 2021) - The National Golf Course Owners Association (NGCOA), the only trade association dedicated exclusively to golf course owners and operators, is pleased to announce its latest corporate partnership with Tagmarshal, the experts in data-driven on-course optimization. Through this new relationship, NGCOA members will receive rebates when purchasing Tagmarshal’s software products and devices. NGCOA members can learn more and take advantage of this benefit via the Pro Shop section of the NGCOA Smart Buy Marketplace at ngcoa.org/smartbuy/pro-shop.

Tagmarshal helps courses optimize operations by providing full course oversight, including player activity and real-time reporting for proactive management of field flow and efficient on-course operations. Tagmarshal’s GPS-based system gives owners and operators real-time information about where players are on the course and how long they are taking to complete each hole; this technology enables staff to preemptively manage the pace of play in real-time, understand course traffic for cart tracking and grounds maintenance, and improve the player experience — which generates savings and additional golf course revenue.

“Data drives decisions, and this year NGCOA has focused on bringing on partners who can provide critical information our members need to make more educated decisions,” said Jay Karen, NGCOA’s Chief Executive Officer. “We’re confident that Tagmarshal’s technology and industry expertise will bring our members’ on-course operations to a whole new level.”

This partnership includes sponsorships of NGCOA’s annual Golf Business Conference and Multi-Course & Resort Operators Retreat. Tagmarshal will also share its comparative data, analysis and insights with the golf course industry through NGCOA’s online Tech Center and various web broadcasts.

“We’re very excited to partner with NGCOA because our technology is fundamentally designed for operators of golf courses of all sizes and types,” said Bodo Sieber, Tagmarshal’s CEO. “Our products improve efficiencies by providing real-time actionable data and reporting, so courses see an immediate decrease in operational challenges, and continuous incremental improvements of their operation, for a long-term increase in player satisfaction, loyalty and revenue.”

Contains Valuable Insight and Guidance on Various Aspects of Golf Course Ownership

Charleston, S.C. (June 23, 2021) - The National Golf Course Owners Association (NGCOA) has released its latest research publication, So, You Want to Own a Golf Course? — A Must-Read Primer for Any Aspiring Golf Course Owner. NGCOA, which specifically represents golf course owners around the country through education and advocacy efforts, developed this comprehensive guide providing foundational knowledge related to golf course ownership to those who may be considering ownership.

This publication resulted from numerous inquiries to NGCOA from both its members and non-members across a wide range of disciplines. Within its 50-pages are 10 chapters that take a deep dive into topics such as The Lay of the Land for Prospective Buyers, Are You the Right Person to Own a Golf Course?, How Exactly Does the Golf Course Business Work?, Resources for Course Buyers, Before and After Purchase and many more. New or aspiring owners can only benefit from advice from those who, in many cases, learned the hard way what did or did not work. Those interested in this guide can download the publication at no charge at ngcoa.org/SYWTOAGC.

"Only those who have written a check — or taken on a mortgage — to buy a golf course and have lived it for a period of time can truly understand the risk and reward of owning a course," said Jay Karen, Chief Executive Officer of NGCOA. “No one should go into ownership lightly, and in this book we hear from several owners and experts who give the unvarnished truth.”

"So, You Want to Own a Golf Course is the go-to primer for anyone aspiring to purchase a golf course,” said John Brown, Chief Executive Officer of Brown Golf Management. “As an NGCOA member and multi-course owner, I can personally attest to the wide range of research and due diligence."

Newest Partner Assists Businesses with Determining Eligibility and Applying for up to Hundreds of Thousands of Dollars in Tax Credits

Charleston, S.C. (May 5, 2021) - The National Golf Course Owners Association (NGCOA) is pleased to welcome Rockerbox as its latest Smart Buy Marketplace partner. In response to the newly-extended Employee Retention Tax Credit (ERTC), NGCOA has partnered with Rockerbox to help golf course businesses determine if they are eligible for the ERTC program for both 2020 and 2021.

These credits are designed to help small business owners offset the economic losses associated with the COVID-19 pandemic, which can keep employees on the payroll, and can result in hundreds of thousands of dollars and increased cash flow. Even if a golf course took advantage of the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP), it may still be eligible for this tax credit. The consultation with Rockerbox takes 15 minutes, and is a no-cost, no-obligation opportunity for golf course businesses to find out if — and how much — they are eligible to receive.

“The PPP was a life-saver for so many golf courses, but the ERTC credit could have an even bigger impact to the bottom line,” said Jay Karen, NGCOA’s Chief Executive Officer. “The application process is incredibly detailed and complex, especially if you don’t have your own controller or chief financial officer. We are thrilled to have Rockerbox as a partner to help businesses in our industry.”

Once Rockerbox determines a golf course business’s eligibility, they will work with the business to calculate the number of credits, and then file with the IRS. For 2020, each eligible employee can earn up to $5,000 in credits, and for 2021, each eligible employee can earn up to $7,000 per quarter (or $28,000 for the entire year). Credits are fully refundable and are used to offset the employer portion of payroll taxes. This can add up to tens of thousands for smaller operators, and hundreds of thousands for larger ones.

“The Rockerbox team is excited to have an opportunity to work with the NGCOA to assist golf course owners and operators in taking advantage of the  ERTC program,” said Philip Wentworth, Rockerbox Founder and CEO. “When appropriately executed, the Employee Retention Tax Credit program can provide much needed capital to eligible small business owners. We look forward to sitting down with each golf course, virtually, to discuss their unique situation to determine ERTC eligibility.”

Golf course owners and operators who are interested in talking to a representative to learn more and determine ERTC eligibility can visit Rockerbox’s page in the NGCOA Smart Buy Marketplace at ngcoa.org/rockerbox.

Pellucid Corp.’s Golf Market Research Center Becomes NGCOA’s Latest Member Benefit

Charleston, S.C. (April 21, 2021) - The National Golf Course Owners Association (NGCOA) is pleased to announce Pellucid Corp. as its latest corporate partner. Through this partnership, Pellucid’s Golf Market Research Center (GMRC) will be available to NGCOA members at a reduced price through the NGCOA Smart Buy Marketplace. Pellucid will also share its research findings with the golf course industry through NGCOA’s online Research Center.

The GMRC provides golf course owners and operators with facility comparative reporting and benchmarking information; this 20-minute, recorded webinar explains the program and demonstrates the tools and reports outlined below:

    • Mini-Market Profile: 10-dimensional profile of the facility’s Designated Marketing Area (DMA) including golfers, golfers/18-hole equivalent (EHE), supply level and mix across 5 Pellucid facility types (Private, Learning & Practice, Pub-Regulation Premium / Value / Price), supply/demand imbalance, market annual rounds, velocity (rds / EHE) and % Utilization by facility type.

    • Monthly Trends View: graph/table for the measures of Rounds and Utilization for any month (2018-2021) input into the facility data screen; any individual month and Year-to-Date for that month.

    • Key Performance Indicators (KPI) Scorecard: Shows Pellucid’s 7 KPIs for course performance (Golf Revenue, Rounds, Capacity Rounds, Utilization, Revenue-per-Available Round (RevpAR), Revenue per Played Round, Percentage Achieved Green Fee). This single-page scorecard shows values for any selected month and the Year-to-Date (YTD) period compared to the same period one year ago.

    • Market/Facility Peer Group Benchmarking Scorecard: When there are enough facilities in the market (25+) and/or by Pellucid facility type (5+/ea). Pellucid will produce the benchmarking scorecard against the average for the above seven KPIs for the month and YTD periods (as long as sample participation holds)

    • The completed GMRC will also include market/peer group benchmarking in those markets with enough participating courses to create the blind and balanced sample.

The GMRC is in its pilot phase until May 31, 2021, allowing both NGCOA members and non-member golf courses to participate at no cost. Once a facility is registered, it can share information and view real-time industry reports immediately. Golf courses that would like to participate should contact Jim Koppenhaver at jim@pellucidcorp.com by May 31, 2021 with the facility name and contact information of the designated administrator.

When the program officially launches on June 1, 2021, complimentary pilot registrations will be deactivated, and golf course facilities will have until July 31, 2021 to join as a GRMC Charter Member. Charter Members will receive the following benefits beginning June 1:

    • Lowest price guarantee in the case of an annual price increase

    • FREE access to two (2) Pellucid Weather Impact services, an annual $540 value ($360 and $180 respectively) including a Cognilogic historical weather impact report and Foresight weather impact forecasting.

    • Participation in the Co-op Commercial Model resulting in annual fee reductions based on the initiative’s economics.

Appointment Confirms Association’s Commitment to Supporting Golf & Travel

Charleston, SC (March 18, 2021) - The National Golf Course Owners Association (NGCOA) is pleased to announce that its CEO, Jay Karen, was appointed to the U.S. Travel Association Board of Directors last week. This is the first time the golf industry has been represented on the organization's board; this seat ensures that NGCOA’s industry priorities are included within U.S. Travel’s larger public and national travel policy messages.

Additionally, this appointment is a critical early step in the emerging NGCOA Golf & Travel Initiative, which NGCOA created to address the needs of golf resorts and other golf businesses that rely heavily on the domestic and international traveler. “Thirty percent of the entire $84B golf economy is touched by travel and tourism,” said Karen. “It’s incumbent upon us to be good citizens with the rest of the travel industry, and to advocate for golf’s needs inside the travel industry.”

The U.S. Travel Association is the country's authority for pro-travel public policy and advocacy work for the travel industry. NGCOA will become involved with U.S. Travel’s advocacy efforts in Washington as it relates not only to golf, but also to increasing international travelers, travel’s $2.5 trillion economic impact, and the 15.8 million Americans employed by the industry. In February 2021, U.S. Travel submitted its updated relief and recovery priorities to Congress; NGCOA supports these priorities as well.
