Fast Bad Golf

Collins Hill Golf Course in Lawrenceville, Georgia, recently started “Fast Bad Golf,” a program designed to encourage beginning female golfers to stop by the course for a quick nine holes and worry about having a good time rather than posting a good score.

The premise is simple: Show up on Tuesday at 6 p.m., and get finished before dark. Fast Bad Golf is all about getting around the course in the fewest number of minutes.

More importantly, the program strives to make the game fun. Each foursome has a timekeeper. The clock starts when the first shot is taken and stops when time expires for that hole. If time has elapsed before everyone has holed out, they simply pick up and move to the next hole.

“If par is 13 minutes and they finish in 12 minutes and 45 seconds, they get a score for that hole,” says director of golf Scott Hare, who adopted the idea after a brainstorming session with some colleagues. “The goal is to finish all nine holes.” Once a participant shows they can complete nine holes for two consecutive weeks, they’ll be invited to graduate into a women’s scramble league.

Hare hopes the program will encourage women who take private lessons or participate in the Get Golf Ready program to get off the practice range and onto the course. “When you’re on the range, you’re in your own little world,” Hare notes. “You can lose track of time out there, so we’re trying to get them to play fast.”
