Looking for a unique offering to separate yourself from the competition? If so, you might do well to borrow a few notes from Grayhawk Golf Club. Musical notes, that is.
When opening the 36-hole facility’s Talon course in late 1994, just-hired director of golf Joe Shershenovich suggested piped-in music would differentiate Grayhawk from its competitors. That idea gave rise to Grayhawk’s Rock & Roll Range, a practice area where golfers can swing to the jams of classic rock legends that are blasted over speakers.
Grayhawk’s Muzak receiver features 20 different stations in 20 different zones. Hot FM (mainstream Top 40) is piped inside the golf shop and clubhouse restaurants, while classic rock is played exclusively on the Rock & Roll Range, outdoor patio and in service areas. However, Shershenovich admits to switching to country when Toby Keith, Clint Black and John Michael Montgomery teed it up. Countless other musicians have also visited, including REM and Hootie & the Blowfish.
More than just a novelty, the classic rock amenity has paid dividends over the years for Grayhawk. Green fee purchasers earn Rock & Roll Range privileges, which are also among the perks of purchasing a Black Tee (range access any time) or White Tee card (afternoon access only).
To further capitalize on his musical bent, Shershenovich hopes to install appropriate USB chargers in the club’s golf carts to cater to customers who enjoy listening to iPods while playing. “The point is Grayhawk is fun, and music is, too,” he notes. “Many people tell us the Rock & Roll Range is just one more reason why they’re glad they came here.”
